The story of No Signal radio.
This instalment of RA's ongoing partnership with Black Minds Matter sees Vanessa Maria speak with Jojo Sonubi, the graphic designer and archivist behind London party RECESS and Black radio platform No Signal.
No Signal came to life over lockdown, beginning as a livestream to replace an edition of RECESS cancelled by Covid-19. No Signal's NS10v10 series sees DJs represent iconic artists by selecting tracks from their catalogue and presenting them in a battle format on-air, with the strongest track of each round decided by Twitter users. The format proved a hit, bringing in over 200,000 listeners for its May Day edition. Now broadcasting seven days a week, No Signal's programming aims to reflect the breadth of the black diaspora, from R&B to regional varieties of house, talk radio and '90s chart hits. In conversation, you'll hear Sonubi and Maria speak about the process of starting a radio station in lockdown, the importance of protecting your peace and navigating imposter syndrome.
