The funk legend connecting with a new generation.
Steve Arrington is a funk musician and vocalist whose influence spans multiple eras and music cultures. In his youth, he jumped from professional Latin percussionist to fronting Slave, singing on hits like “Watching You” that remain instantly recognisable decades later. Then came his own group Hall Of Fame, which remains one of the most heavily-sampled outfits of the '80s, forming the backbone of multiple hip-hop, pop and dance classics while heavily influencing the G-Funk sound.
In recent years, he's cemented even further his cultural impact by working with a younger generation of artists, such as Dâm-Funk and Thundercat. Arrington spoke with Senay Kenfe following the release of his new album Down to the Lowest Terms: The Soul Sessions about the significance of these new connections to the greater arc of his venerable career.
