A pillar of dance music history reflects on 30 years of Inner City.
Kevin Saunderson's influence on house and techno is difficult to overstate. Apart from helping to turn house into a global phenomenon with his Inner City project, Saunderson's early records under names like E-Dancer and Reese, along with his label KMS, laid the blueprint for techno in the late '80s and early '90s. His Reese bass synth patch became a staple of hardcore, jungle and drum & bass, and remains a defining sound in electronic music, while his pioneering approach to remixing—making a new track from scratch and adding a few elements from the original rather than working mostly with the original sounds—quickly became standard practice in the industry.
Now Saunderson is touring the world with his son Dantiez and vocalist Steffanie Christi'an to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Inner City, plus there's new material in the works, too. Between dates, he was able to stop by RA's Berlin office for a conversation with Matt Unicomb covering his plans for the tour, his formative experiences watching DJs like Larry Levan and Ron Hardy and his response to Inner City's shocking success.
