Vera and Alexandra tell the story behind one of Berlin's hottest labels.
Melliflow was a long time coming. The label's founders, DJs Vera and Alexandra, announced its inaugural release from Berlin-based producer Spacetravel in 2016 after years of planning the label and working together on parties. Its output so far—nine releases from established talents like Binh and fresh faces like Montevideo's Z@P and Italy's And.rea—reflects the curators' careful consideration, experience and taste. So it's no wonder that Vera and Alexandra's joint endeavour quickly became an important connective node in the musical sub-world they've inhabited for over a decade.
Vera's career as a DJ began in Germany's south-west, where she held down residencies at local clubs like Robert Johnson. Since 2008, she's released a slew of solo productions through labels like Cargo Edition and Oslo, while her Mara Trax collaboration with Mayaan Nidam landed on Perlon, among other outposts. Eventually, she crossed paths with Alexandra, who worked for years with the crew behind Romania's annual seaside festival Sunwaves before building her own successful DJ career. As DJs they share a taste for subtle grooves and tripping textures; as label owners and party promoters their work ethics compliment each other in a similar way. The pair visited Elissa Stolman at Resident Advisor's Berlin HQ a few weeks back to unpack the science behind one of contemporary dance music's most exciting outlets.
